Flashback Friday, The 2016 Seminar, Derek Hansen-Applying Concepts of Signal and Noise to High Performance Training

“We talk technology, but how many people use a stop watch on a daily basis?”

Derek Hansen joined us for The 2016 edition of The Seminar. Derek gives us a great overview of all things training from his point of view, and how those who have mentored him have influenced him along the way. This is brought together as the FAQ’s Derek gets which includes: high vs low, general vs specific, peripheral vs central, afferent vs efferent, and signal vs noise. This dives right into the High Low model that he learned from Charlie, the importance of timing with it, and how it all ties together with quality over quantity. This leads right into how to use sprinting, why it’s important, where speed training fits into the grand scheme of training and performance enhancement, and how accelerations and top end speed work are very different.

He then dives into the idea of Signal and Noise Model starting out how Nate Silver’s book impacted it. The first point he touches upon is how to increase the signal, second was how to reduce noise, how he looks at them, and what the biggest limiting factor was, the brain. This leads him into stochastic resonance and how it impacts positively on the “sweet spot” of noise. Derek ties this in with training by breaking down why he started Micro-dosing his athlete’s training, what he saw as the pros of using it, and how can coaches implement it with their athletes. Exercise selection in the realm of signal and noise is what he covers next. He displays a continuum of exercises and how they “fit.” He also breaks down Halo Neuroscience TDCS and EMS, including anecdotical evidence as to how they’re successful and how to implement them within your training.
