Introducing 2019 Presenter Jim Radcliffe

Today I am elated to welcome Coach Jim Radcliffe from The University of Oregon to this summer’s edition of The Seminar. Coach Radcliffe has worked with some of the world’s best athletes, producing NCAA, National, International, and Olympic Champions. Most people in the field probably know his name mostly for being the “speed guy”, but when you do your research you realize that Coach “Rad” has been way more than that to the field. Presenting all over the US and the world, being a multi timed published author in both periodicals and books, Jim has been leading from the front driving education in this vocation and giving back to coaches for the past three decades. A track record (pun intended) that speaks for itself, and the desire to continue to pull the profession forward from the front make Coach Radcliffe an absolute perfect fit for this summer’s event. But enough from me, let’s meet Coach Jim Radcliffe…

JD: If you could, please give our readers a little background information about you, what your niche in the world of athletics is, accomplishments, how you got there, education, any products you have available and/or notable publications.

JR: I have been at The University of Oregon starting in 1985, and in my tenure, I’ve been about to be involved in quite a few sensational moments as a coach. Coaching has brought me the privilege of being an author, the trust from international teams to have me on as a consultant, along with being able to present to coaches, not just all over the country, but around the world as well. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with some sensational athletes who have had tremendous success from multiple national championship teams and individual NCAA champs, to international champions, and Olympic gold medalists.

JD: Discuss with us the mistakes you see made by strength and conditioning coaches in the United States and around the world, andwhat you feel should be done differently/how to correct these issues.

JR: The main issue is just a lack of being educated physically. Being an “old” dinosaur of a coach and from an era where being a coach (of anything) meant you were also educated as a PE teacher. Some of the issues we are seeing as a S&C profession really boils down to not enough of this type of education. 

JD: What advice would you give a coach to improve knowledge in the lines of continuing education, meaning could you point our readers in a direction to find the scientific and practical information to improve the methods they use to improve performance?

JR: Some quickly accessed and helpful in terms of practical research are the GAIN network, a website called ResearchGate, and The Strength Coach Network.

JD:If you could give a brief description of what our attendees can expect from you at The Seminar?

JR: A practical approach to using the science of athletic movement to simplfy the developmental training concepts.

Who is Jim Radcliffe?

One of the most overlooked elements in the success of Oregon’s student-athletes is Jim Radcliffe, now in his 30th year as the school’s head strength and conditioning coach and 32nd overall. He not only plays a significant role in the Ducks’ football program as the designer of the year-round conditioning calendar but also has been quick to aid the athletic development of athletes in the sports of baseball as well as men’s and women’s track & field.

While he has long been one of the integral components to the program’s success – as often credited by both past and present Oregon student-athletes – his work and innovation are now recognized as one of the overwhelming contributions to the fast pace the football team has employed the past seven years.

During his tenure as the longest among his counterparts within the Pac-12 Conference, he as established himself as a highly-respected teacher, mentor and author. An active clinician throughout the world, he is widely recognized as one of the leading authorities regarding exercise for the development of strength, speed and agility.

In addition to overseeing a strength and conditioning program that was named one of the top 10 in the country in 2013 by Bleacher Report, Radcliffe was included on a list of the 65 most influencial strength coaches of all time by another 2012 website, as well as one of three national finalists for FootballScoop’s Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year award in 2010.

Radcliffe, who guided the receivers during much of the 1999 fall camp, furnishes the student-athletes with a wide variety of exercise through weight training and lifting systems, and is a noted authority in the field of exercises dealing with the improvement of speed and quickness.

The 58-year-old McCloud, Calif., native became assistant strength coach at Oregon in 1985, a position he held for two years before assuming the direction over his specialty.

Radcliffe taught and coached a variety of sports and was the athletic trainer for four years at Aloha (OR) High School from 1980-83.

He then did graduate study at Colorado and worked in private business prior to joining the Ducks’ staff. Graduating from Pacific (OR) with a degree in physical education and health in 1980, he played four seasons at defensive back and was captain of the special teams. Radcliffe earned his Master’s in biomechanics from Oregon in 1992.

Radcliffe is active in national organizations surrounding his profession and is certified by the United States Weightlifting Federation. He also has written books, been published in numerous professional journals and produced videos on plyometrics, one of the most effective exercise techniques.

Strength Coach Network Exclusive Lecture: William Wayland-Pragmatism and Strength & Conditioning

“Make sure you have a good question that you’re trying to answer in the first place.”

“We are ultimately stress managers.”

“The idea that all approaches are equally valid is a flawed one.”

Pragmatism is defined as an approach that assess the truth of meaning of theories or believes in term of the success of their practical application. In this month’s exclusive lecture in The Strength Coach Network, William Wayland dives into the importance of this in strength and conditioning beginning by sharing the reasons he had to start exploring pragmatism with fighters and PGA tour golfers had such a massive impact on it. This leads him right into philosophy of training and what two approaches are at the forefront of what he’s looking in programming. This includes a discussion of the entire physical preparation training process, and different things that William sees as meaningful and expected in the training process.

Next, William touches upon pragmatism as a concept, giving us a historical review of pragmatism, Pierce’s cycle of pragmatism and how it effects coaches on a daily basis, and expertism and how it can be way off. He also discusses action, how prediction can lead to induction, and then abduction. He finishes off going through the map of expertism giving pros and cons of each quadrant including specific examples of people who live in each.

William finishes this talk with an example of a coach that we all know well, Bob Aljeo, and how Bob adapted to issues based on the MLB season, including what changes he made to his programming to better his athletes.

Introducing 2019 Presenter Cheryl Zonkowski

Today I get the pleasure of introducing you to our sixth presenter for The 2019 Seminar, Cheryl Zonkowski. Cheryl has been working at the highest level of sports nutrition sense the turn of the century working at The University of Florida and most recently with the United States Navy’s Special Warfare Operators. For as long as we have held this event people have asked for us to bring in someone who could discuss nutritional strategies we can implement with our athletes, which is why we are so excited to have Cheryl aboard. With experience at one of the top departments in the NCAA and time working with our nation’s finest I couldn’t be more excited to hear what she has to share with all of us this July. So without further delay, let’s meet Cheryl Zonkowski.

 

JD: If you could, please give our readers a little background information about you, what your niche in the world of athletics is, accomplishments, how you got there, education, any products you have available and/or notable publications.

CZ: First off, thank you for having me present Jay! I am the founder of Catalyzt Nutrition LLC, where I review and evaluate fueling, hydration, and recovery practices to optimize cognition, energy levels, and longevity for an array of clients. With Calatyzt Nutrition I interpret client’s biomarkers to determine individual interventions, meal plans, and supplement recommendations. For the past 8 years, I’ve had the honor of working with Naval Special Warfare Operators. Before I started with the Navy, I was the Director of Sports Nutrition for the University of Florida Gators where I worked with over 750 student-athletes. I have professional memberships with: the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Collegiate, Professional, and Sports Dietitians Association, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and hold credentials as a Registered Dietitian, Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. As far as education, I received a Bachelor’s Degree with a double major in Food Science and Human Nutrition and Psychology and my Master’s Degree in Human Performance/Exercise Physiology from the University of Florida (GO GATORS!).

JD:Discuss with us the mistakes you see made by strength and conditioning coaches in the United States and around the world, and what you feel should be done differently/how to correct these issues.

CZ:Fortunately, in recent years there has been a shift in attention to the value of nutrition and fueling for athletes. Earlier in my career it could be challenging to obtain full trust and “buy-in” from coaches and strength and conditioning coaches to educate their athletes and implement proper fueling and recovery strategies for individuals and teams. Oftentimes tradition, team culture and dynamics, and punishment and/or reward was what guided food choices. Thanks to the growth and specificity of research, success stories, open mindedness, and continuing education, a much higher percentage of strength and conditioning coaches see the value in proper fueling, recovery, and hydration. The Performance Nutrition field is growing and the value of Performance Dietitians as subject matter experts is increasing. Providing athletes with proper nutrition education is critical to performance, injury mitigation, and career longevity. Having an expert, even in a small capacity (referral based vs part time consulting vs full time programming), will promote both improved physical and mental performance.

JD: What advice would you give a coach to improve knowledge in the lines of continuing education, meaning could you point our readers in a direction to find the scientific and practical information to improve the methods they use to improve performance?

CZ: Continuing education is a necessary element for all subject matter experts, both within their area of expertise and critical elements of related areas. As is true for any profession, vetting the source of all information and research is important prior to finalizing education points and training tools/techniques. Organizations such as Collegiate, Professional, Sports Dietitians Association (CPSDA) and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists (AND’s SCAN) vet and provide references and resources for professional affiliates. Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism provide some of the latest data to the field.

JD:If you could give a brief description of what our attendees can expect from you at The Seminar?

CZ:Seminar Objectives: (Please let me know your thoughts on these, they are up for conversation.)

  1. Learn full capabilities (menu of services) of a Performance Dietitian.
  2. Identify avenues to engage a Performance Dietitian with your athlete(s).
  3. Understand how a Performance Dietitian prioritizes their capabilities and services to optimize your athlete(s) fueling, performance, and recovery goals.

JD:Any closing thoughts?

CZ: Developing a platform for anti-inflammatory and performance nutrition has been my passion for over 15 years. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to fueling. Appropriately applied research combined with individual metrics, preferences, and lifestyle factors facilitate the optimal program for each person. Even then, fueling and recovery strategies should be periodized based on training cycles/seasons. The scientific foundations hold true, but the art lies in the personalization. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to share my passion for Performance Nutrition with attendees. I look forward to meeting everyone!

Lecture #12: Jay DeMayo University of Richmond – Completing The Maze: How Following Measurements Can Unlock Superior Performance

“The biggest thing with this is we need to remember, no matter what we do, training practice life, for all things, there is a cost of adaptation, and you need to pay that cost.”

This month’s exclusive lecture, University of Richmond’s Head Strength Coach, Jay DeMayo, continues his discussion on minimal effective dose and how measurements and monitoring play a role in how he implements it.

Let lecture starts with a brief review of the role of the coach’s principles of training, evaluations and KPI’s and why they should impact and drive the training process, how precursors and “checking boxes” is important in this development.

This leads directly into discussing the object of control in training and how we, as coaches, can be successful with the training process being the object of control, and how they can be even more successful having the athlete be the object of control in the system. This includes a breakdown of how he sets up his training with his student athletes from day one up until they’re ready for individualization of their training by KPI’s.

The final 20-25 minutes is a breakdown of how Jay uses the athlete as the object of control. This includes examples of monitoring and ways to dive into the state of the athletes. This includes: sRPE, questionnaires, and readiness monitoring. This includes about 20 minutes of him sharing with us how he uses his athletes Omegawave readings to drive conversations about training, recovery work, and nutrition, based on their states of readiness.

Introducing 2019 Presenter Mark Stephenson

Today I get the pleasure to announce our fifth presenter for The 2019 Edition of The Seminar, Mark Stephenson. Mark is currently the Director of Player Performance with the Detroit Lions. Prior to his move to Michigan Mark worked with multiple Special Force Operators, including being involved in the assessment and selection of Navy SEALs. Mark unique track record and his work with pushing the profession forward though his time at The NSCA and the building of the TSAC program make him an exceptional addition the The Seminar, and one that I hope all the strength and conditioning professionals are as excited about having on board as I am, but for now, let’s meet Mark Stephenson…

JD: If you could, please give our readers a little background information about you, what your niche in the world of athletics is, accomplishments, how you got there, education, any products you have available and/or notable publications.

MS: Currently I am the Director of Player Performance for the NFL’s Detroit Lions where I am responsible for the coordination within disciplines of strength & conditioning, rehabilitation, nutrition, and coaching, along with overseeing the sports science and recovery program for the club.

Prior to joining the Detroit Lions, I had the privilege of holding the position of Human Performance Program manager for Naval Special Warfare Development Group. While at DEVGRU I worked with the operators on multiple performance enhancement methods as it relates to the physical and mental integration for optimal performance. This including being heavily involved in the Selection & Assessment of Navy SEALs and their abilities to perform under stressful conditions. Through physiological load monitoring, we developed training and recovery strategies that dramatically improved performance sustainment, sleep quality while mitigating the effects of chronic overtraining and chronic pain/fatigue. Our team also developed specific protocols to optimize performance and longevity among Navy SEALs. Physiological assessments, such as HRV, DC potential, and TMG have proven to be successful in profiling elite performers as well as aiding in the manipulation of training loads in order to sustain high performance over long periods.

Prior to working at DEVGRU, served as the Director of the Human Performance Center at the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) (2004 – 2009) where I over saw the resident strength and conditioning programs, physiological testing and assessments, and program development. This included serving as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Colorado College Men’s Ice Hockey team (2004 – 2009), High Performance coach for the Broadmoor Skating Club, and the Tactical Physiologist for the Colorado Springs Police SWAT team. While at the NSCA he developed the Tactical Strength and Conditioning (TSAC) program.

I’ve also been able to present at both national and international professional conferences on topics related to the state of physical and psychological readiness, recovery, and performance. I’ve also worked, trained, and developed athletes at the high school, NCAA Div. I, professional, and Olympic levels. He continues to consult with various professional sports teams in the NFL, MLB, and NBA.

JD: Discuss with us the mistakes you see made by strength and conditioning coaches in the United States and around the world, and what you feel should be done differently/how to correct these issues.

MS: With over 30 years in strength and conditioning, I have seen a transformation in philosophies from strength & power to more preventative. As physical therapists and athletic trainers became more involved in strength and conditioning, especially in the continuing education, there has been more of an emphasis on “prehabilitation”. As strength & conditioning coaches ventured into the commercial training field focusing more on “sport specific” training. Both have gotten away from training overall athleticism.

Where I believe the biggest mistake has been is the focus on monitoring loads for the purpose of not “overtraining” or working the players too hard to “prevent” injuries and optimize performance. The mistake is not using the load monitoring to understand what the demands of the activity are (practice, training, games) so that the strength and conditioning coach can better prepare the athlete to handle those loads. Optimization comes when the athlete is optimal recovered, both physically and mentally, mitigating injuries and sustaining performance.

What advice would you give a coach to improve knowledge in the lines of continuing education, meaning could you point our readers in a direction to find the scientific and practical information to improve the methods they use to improve performance?

MS: Continually improving your knowledge, both through application and empirical research, is necessary to truly be a professional. Increasing your network is helpful, increasing your inner-network is critical. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of mis-information and self-promotion that can get confusing. Be critical of all information and do your own due diligence to verify the information and decide for yourself it is creditable. This includes empirical research. Read the study yourself and determine if it is what you would conclude

JD: If you could give a brief description of what our attendees can expect from you at The Seminar?

MS: Attendees can expect to gain insight into what it means to train hardiness and how recovery is a key element to achieving resiliency.

JD: Any closing thoughts?

MS: Hardiness is the result of consistent hard efforts. Success has 3 key ingredients…Dedication, Consistency, and Mindset.

Who is Mark Stephenson?

Exclusive Lecture #10 – Lachlan Wilmot The Application of Plyometric Training in Team Sport

This month’s lecture brings us Lachlan Wilmot sharing how he utilizes and progresses the use of jump training and plyometrics in team settings. Lachlan beings his discussion with an overview of plyometrics and jump training touching upon Dr. Verkhoshansky’s, Dr. Yessis’, and Fred Wilt’s role in developing these exercises. This leads him right into where the importance of stiffness comes in and how plyometrics come in. He then touches upon the performance benefits of plyo’s in team setting, and how he separated and prescribes them. These three are: horizontal for acceleration, vertical for max velocity, lateral for change of direction. He, also touches upon the benefits of using plyometrics which, in his opinion, is injury reduction.

This leads right into the bread and butter, his plyometric continuum:
1) Eccentric Absorption
2) Concentric Development
3) Jump Integration
4) Continuous Jumps
5) Shock Method

His continuum is related directly to his Plyometric Funnel which is how he builds his exercises:
1) Vector
2) Movement Categorization
3) Descriptors
4) Modalities

He then brings it all together with giving a step by step evaluation and demonstration of how he builds these exercises and how they would progress from exercise to exercise. These progressions are in each direction (Linear, Lateral, Rotational, Vertical, and Mixed).

Lachlan next shares with us how he fits them into the big puzzle of the training program. He sees them fitting into 3 places:
1) On Field Implementation
2) Gym Movement Prep Implementation
3) Strength Program Implementation

This includes the pro and cons of implementing them in each situation and how he has utilized each of them to include Plyo’s into his athlete’s developmental program. He gives us some actual footage of examples from how he has utilized drills done in some of the situations with his athletes.

Lachlan then gives us a step by step as to how he builds and periodizes his program base on his continuum though out the year. This simple step by step building block approach, although simple, can be very complex while allowing a vast leeway for creativity by the coach. This also includes how that continuum is pertinent in his rehab/return to play plan.

Next, Lachlan discusses testing considerations for the implementation of plyometric training. He uses 2 different tests to determine is athletes are strong enough and build his power profile. From this profile he can look at their weaknesses and strengths, and this dictates their training. In the pre-season they train more of their weaknesses, while in season they focus more on what the tests showed were their strengths.

He finishes off discussing alterations to training that can be made when athletes are not able to perform this type of exercises.

In our tenth coaches corner, I share our general aerobic training program. This is a topic that I am asked about quite often, so I thought it would make a great addition to The Community. This discussion includes the equipment that I use with my athletes and why I’ve chosen those brands. Specifically, an in-depth break down of the first three phases of our “conditioning”, including the goals of the means, how to execute each method, and when to progress them. I give examples of how we utilize our monitoring technology to not only determine if they are ready “to go” or not, but also what their “zones” should be for that day. The talk finished with a brief break down how I progress and program the three.

INTRODUCING 2019 PRESENTER Dr. Charlie Weingroff

Our fourth presenter for this summer’s edition of The Seminar is a man who has been a driving force in this vocation for quite some time, Dr. Charlie Weingroff. Charlie has been pushing this profession forward though educating coaches on the means and methods that he has found successful in improving the health and performance of his athletes and clients. Charlie is another one of the practitioners that I should have had on the docket a long time ago. He has impacted me as a coach in more ways than he even knows. An elite practitioner with an elite total on the platform makes Charlie an absolute homerun addition to The 2019’s Seminar. But enough from me, let’s me Dr. Charlie Weingroff…

JD: If you could, please give our readers a little background information about you, what your niche in the world of athletics is, accomplishments, how you got there, education, any products you have available and/or notable publications.

CW: So, by education, I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy with Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science.  The other professional certifications include ATC and CSCS.  I began my professional career as an ATC in professional basketball, starting with the NJ Nets in 1999 and continued to join the Philadelphia 76ers.  After 1 year with the Sixers, I moved in a strength coach role, where I re-invented my approach to everything where using skills and principles as a therapist in a strength & conditioning environment.  This is where the Training = Rehab commercial began, and we have produced 3 10-12 hr DVDs chronicling every several years of growth and change of the model.  Moving on from the NBA, I am now Director of Physical Development for Men’s Canada Basketball and have consulted with teams and individual athletes in major sports and universities across the world.

 

JD: Discuss with us the mistakes you see made by strength and conditioning coaches in the United States and around the world, and what you feel should be done differently/how to correct these issues.

CW: The number 1 way to funnel the errors I see is a lack of critical filter on information that we use as well as information that appears to dissent with what we use.  The questions I would like all of us to ask is:

1) why do I believe these people, and

2) why is this person trying to get me to change what I do? 

If we can omit emotion and using strategies that make us feel comfortable and good about ourselves and instead use what is actually best practice, I think a lot of mistakes would be minimized.

 

JD: What advice would you give a coach to improve knowledge in the lines of continuing education, meaning could you point our readers in a direction to find the scientific and practical information to improve the methods they use to improve performance?

CW: Everyone will eventually fall into their own paths, but I think it starts with consuming as much information from all resources as possible, and over time, that filter develops, and we will keep and discard what is useful or not.

Particularly when consuming information from commercial models, try to filter if the message can be used and applied with words and techniques not associated with that model.  That should limit pitfalls and falling into an emotional connection with poor training or rehab methods.

 

JD: If you could give a brief description of what our attendees can expect from you at The

CW: I am expecting to discuss the social and clinical systems and process to Men’s Canada Basketball, which during this decade, objectively has developed more elite men’s basketball players than any other institution in the word.

 

Who is Dr. Charlie Weingroff?

Charlie is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a Certified Athletic Trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.  He is currently a Physical Therapist and Strength & Conditioning Coach at Drive 495 in Manhattan, NY and Fit For Life in Marlboro, NJ.  He also is a member of the Nike Executive Performance Council and serves as the Physical Performance Lead and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Canadian Men’s National Basketball Team. He previously has served as the Director of Physical Performance and Resiliency and Lead Physical Therapist for the United States Marines Corps Special Operations Command in Camp Lejeune, NC. He graduated from Ursinus College with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science in 1996, and went on to earn an MSPT in 1999 and DPT in 2010 from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Beginning in 1998, Charlie spent 12 seasons of professional basketball, highlighted by his time as the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach and Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA. Among the highlights of his tenure in Philadelphia was being part of the medical staff that ranked 1st in the NBA in Player Missed Games in the 2005-06 season.

Through rehabbing patients, he subscribes to a movement-based approach popularized by the works of Gray Cook, Mike Boyle, Val Nsedkin, Dr. Pavel Kolar, and Louie Simmons.  In training athletes and clients, he champions the principles of the Functional Movement Screen and sound, evidence-based training principles.  Some of the methodologies Charlie is formally trained in include DNS, ART, Dry Needling, Graston, FMS/SFMA, TPI, and StrongFirst.

Aside from working with patients, athletes and clients, he is also under the bar himself.  In 2007, he achieved AAPF Elite status in the 220 weight class with a total of 1915 pounds. His best powerlifting competition total is 800 squat, 510 bench press and 605 deadlift.

Currently Charlie is available to treat, train, and consult at Drive495 in Manhattan, NYC and Fit For Life in Marlboro, NJ.  Charlie often teaches and speaks internationally and consults regularly with Nike, the Roddick-Grunberg Tennis Academy, Perform Better, and Equinox Fitness Clubs.

Coaches Corner #9 – Jeff Moyer – DC Sports Training Progressions and Trouble Shooting The GHR

In this edition of The Coaches Corner, DC Sports Training’s Jeff Moyer breaks down many of the ministrations of how the Glute Ham Raise is supposed to be executed. Learning directly from the man who invented the exercise, Dr. Michael Yessis, Jeff goes through a step by step as to how to perform this movement to the specs that Doc designed it. This includes:

1) Set up of the machine, including set up and foot placement.
2) Setting the back
3) The Hip Extension Portion
4) Knee Bend/Toe Press
5) Necessary ROM

Once he has given this breakdown Jeff shares with us some common ways the exercise is performed in a different manner than Doc originated.

Following that Jeff shares with us some variations of this exercise that they can utilize. These include:

1) Eccentric Emphasis
2) Iso-Dynamic
3) The “Plyo” Version

He shares the technical execution and set and rep prescriptions of these means.

Many people use this exercise but have never seen how Doc has taught it, nor known the reason why he has designed the exercise in the manner he did. Although these changes may seem minimal the actual impact on sport performance results in sprinting and COD is exceptional. Hopefully this can help with your prescription of this commonly mistakenly performed exercise and increase the carry over to how your athletes perform in their sporting exercises.
