Author: Anthony Doerr

Genre: Historical Fiction

Drew Review: All the Light We Cannot See has something for a vast array of people. From romantics to military wackos to ornithologists (you’ll have to read it to find out about this last one). My aunt recommended I read this book simply because I enjoy historical fiction books, so for me the devastation of WWII piece really appealed to me. The story is about a blind French girl and a young German boy and how their paths cross during the tail end of WWII in occupied France.

Flashback Friday, The 2019 Seminar: Sam Gardner- Para Sport, proper appreciate of relentless athletes

“There are people who would love to have your bad day.”

Sam Gardner joined us for The 2019 Seminar to educate our attendees on Para Sport, and what training these amazing athlete’s entails. Sam starts out the talk with a little “myth busters” trying to dispel some of the misnomers around Para Sport. He then shares with us a history, or not just Para Sport, but his history, the development of the program here in The USA as well. Sam then discusses the differences coaches will encounter and need to consider when working with athletes with different limitations.

Sam then shares with us how they have started to build sport and athlete profiles. This started for Sam with sport cycling, a sport he never worked with, let alone worked with Para Sport athletes in. He shares with us how the medical research along communication with coaches has driven this for each individual sport. He then shows us and example of where all of that work lead to a world championship, and everything went wrong in the beginning.

Sam then brings us into the weight room, and shares with us some assessments they run with their athletes, and how they impact programming. This includes a how their assessments are involved in his return to play programming, and how they’ve altered the set-up of some of these evaluations so they can incorporate these tests more efficiently. He touches upon programming, how we (as coaches) look at training for the most part, and gives multiple examples of how different athletes in the same sport require unique modifications based on their impairments.

Sam came to Richmond to try to educate coaches on Para Sport, and he did a sensational job of that. You can download this phenomenal lecture at the store tab under instant downloads, or it can be found at https://strengthcoachnetwork.com/cvasps/

Flashback Friday, The 2019 Seminar- Nate Brookreson: The Wolfpack Rises

“If you’re setting them up for success, by the time they get there, you’re there because you did everything right to get to that point.”

The 2019 Seminar was the lead off with a case study from NC State’s Assistant AD Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports, Nate Brookreson. This case study was a step by step look at their return to play protocol for a student athlete with a bucket handle meniscus tear.

Step one in this process was to establish roles “in this story”. That includes sports med, nutrition, and Nate’s role in this athlete’s rehabilitation process. Once those were established, they then built “the script”. This stars with a conversation with the doctor, and finishing with this athlete getting back on the court. These steps included:

  • What the actual procedure done was and what can lead to it being a success.
  • Researching ways to help work within the restrictions provided by the MD
  • Establishing a “clear mission” so they can have checks and balances and monitor progress
  • The “chapters” of this process, which is each step to the mission
  • Modalities that they included, and the reasons behind each
  • What were the “stopping points” that were included in program to ensure progress
  • What evaluations they used, why they were selected, and what effect they had on the process

Nate then shares the results of the training, and this ends out not having a happy ending. Nate takes a huge step back and shares with us where he feels they didn’t go the best, in fast the last 35 minutes are Nate answering questions and sharing with us where things went wrong, and what he feels they could have done better.

This is an absolutely sensational presentation, and possibly the bravest one that we have had. Nate stood up in front of us all and shared with us everything they did, and it didn’t work. He then had the strength to be able to show us those of us in attendance where he felt they missed the boat and how we can all be better. This sensational presentation a can be downloaded at the store tab under instant downloads, or can be found at https://strengthcoachnetwork.com/cvasps/

Flashback Friday- The 2019 Seminar- Mark Stephenson- Performance Optimization, training and recovery

“The brains perception is the body’s reality.”

“You can be a cheer leader or you can be a mind setter.”

We welcomed Mark Stephenson from the Detroit Lions to share with us what he’s doing to optimize performance and recovery at The 2019 Seminar. This vast area includes: athlete monitoring, training/workload, performance analytics, mental performance, and recovery. Mark shares with us the guiding principles to performance optimization. This covers the athlete’s perception of their situation, the impact of hard work, recovery, and how powerful knowledge is. Mark then talks about athlete monitoring and what it actually means for it to be evidence based and actionable. He then dives into the realm of performance analytics, and gives an equation of how he looks at performance. Aspects that impact this include: perceived stress, the ANS, HRV, and ACWR (Accute/Chronic Work Ratio).

Mark then shares some insight on training, and its impact on mental performance. This starts with the mindset of the athlete, and how setting an athlete’s mindset can impact everything from training to grit. He then ties in deliberate practice to this and what he saw in a case study with his special operators he got to work with. This section of the talk also includes the coach’s mindset, and how we can be better to make the athlete more effective for their team. Mark finishes off discussing HRV, adaptability, and their impact not just ton performance and training, but the athlete’s ability to recover.

This is an absolutely phenomenal presentation that gives us a 15,000 foot view of how a man has worked with the best special force operators in the world, and now with athletes in the NFL can be downloaded at the store tab under instant downloads, or can be found at https://strengthcoachnetwork.com/cvasps/

Flashback Friday, The 2019 Seminar: Dr. Fergus Connolly-Future Trends in Team Sports

“Effectiveness is do you get the job done, efficiency is at what cost.”

“We under estimate the damage that is done by poor quality work, by poor quality repetitions.”

Fergus Connolly provided a fantastic lecture at The 2019 Seminar sharing some of his experiences and some of the tactics he’s used, including his successes and in failures. Fergus starts out with a few examples of events and some lessons that impacted him and driven him in different directions in his career. This leads him right into the idea of game speed, and he provides an example of how we can communicate with coaches to help drive decisions to improve each athlete to play fast. He then discusses with us tendency’s that are shown in athlete’s as their careers go forward, and how these factors can impact your decisions in their preparation.

Fergus then shares with us how he looked at putting together the week, and provided actual examples and guidelines for these “focuses.”  He classifies drills and games into different levels based on what the outcome of each would be. This leads him into how we can program these for a season with a team, and even provides some ways that he has provided guidelines for coaches to better plan practices to keep the athlete’s safe and increase these qualities of each of the prementioned focuses.

This is an absolutely phenomenal presentation that gives us an inside view of how one of the best performance managers in the world has worked with athletes, and provides us with great direction and ideas as to how we can prepare and manages our athletes at a higher level. Flashback Friday, The 2019 Seminar-Cheryl Zonkowski-Performance Dietitian Capabilities, what a performance dietitian has to offer you and your athletes

“Every single time a tactical athlete, a performance athlete, or any athlete asks you a question, they’re testing you.”

“Having data is great. What happens with that data?”

“If you’re not sleeping you’re never going to optimize your performance.”

In July of 2019 we welcomed Cheryl Zonkowski to The Seminar to discuss with us how we can better implement our dietitians within our performance team. Cheryl starts out by sharing with us what Performance Dietitian’s actually are, and what their field’s requirements are for them to practice. This leads her right into the role of Performance Dietitians. This is one thing that I think a lot of coaches have some slightly incorrect opinions and expectations of. Cheryl discusses everything from goal setting to menu selecting on the road and how/where the PD can be helpful, and where we sometimes misinterpret what they can do. She then runs down the rabbit hole of menu selection, how there are different standards for different teams, and where do “reward meals” fit into the schedule.

Cheryl then shares with us what goes on in individual consultations, starting with what the initial meeting with an athlete can/should consist of, and how that needs to impact what direction the PD will move in. This includes how body fat impacts decisions, the impact of the athlete’s mental status, how trips back home can be handled positively, the athlete’s nutritional history, and the role of sleep in all of this. This leads her right into technology, data, and what is really important with all of those in nutrition.  She finishes off with a just reminder of the basics that are important, including: sleep, recovery means, training cycles, the athletes relationship with foods, and different “party favors” kids get involved with.

This is an awesome presentation that not only opens the viewers eyes to what another member of our performance team can help us be better with, but what we can do if we have to “play that role” because we don’t have the luxury of having a Performance Dietitian. This sensational presentation a can be downloaded at the store tab under instant downloads, or can be found at https://strengthcoachnetwork.com/cvasps/

The Drew Review: Matterhorn, by Karl Marlantes

Book Title: Matterhorn

Year: 2010

Flashback Friday-The 2019 Seminar- Dr. Charlie Weingroff- Systems and Process in High Performance Programs

“Everything I’m going to talk about is based on failure.”

“Unless you have failed and then succeeded again, I’m not sure you believe in anything. I think that’s what you like to do.”

“Ask the questions you didn’t you know needed, so you find the solutions you didn’t know you had.”

“Exceed the demands, create shock, allow the body to adapt.”

“Everybody is equal, some are just more replaceable.”

2019 brought us something that has been a long time coming, the welcoming of Dr. Charlie Weingroff to The Seminar to discuss the systems and processes behind what they are building with Canada Basketball. Charlie starts out this talk by sharing with us the value of having systems, and how that can be transferable to many situations. He starts out with some examples of the success they’re having building basketball in Canada, which has had a significant upward slope in the past 10 years.

After he shares with us where the program they are building in Canada started Charlie starts to dive into their three systems where are: clinical systems, data analysis systems, and social systems and processes. The first system he covers is the clinical one. This starts out with the explanation of how they set this up with metaphorical buckets and “windows of success”, how they connect, and what we can do to impact those connections. These ideas, like the whole high-performance idea, comes from the business world, and Charlie shares where these connect. This leads him to the 4 “tests” that allow them to reach into, and be impacted by, all 6 buckets. These tests are: movement, output, readiness, and sensory systems. Charlie breaks down each one of those four tests, how they fit into the six buckets, and why each is important in driving their system.

He then touches upon their set ups for data analysis, which starts with (obviously) your best players. The second list is based on who is the most durable. He looks at that based on how many games they played. The third and final list is “who are the winners”. This looks at what is the individuals winning percentage over their career. You then take these three lists and you score it like golf, the person with the lowest number is at the top of the list. At that point you look at what makes those players and you do what makes them special. Seems to make sense, right? Find those that are the best, most durable, and the winners, and do what makes them best.

The third, and final, system that Charlie talks on is the social system and processes. The Seminar was the first time Charlie has spoken on this, and this is one missing piece is so many people athletic programs. This all starts with the idea of safety, and Charlie proposes the idea of calling/talking to people, when you don’t need anything. He then discusses the idea of 100-51-1, and it’s really a sensational way to look at things. If you can, not just as a coach but as a person, and put things down as things you need, things you want, and things that would be nice to have. These things get moved around, so that at some point you actually end out having the things you really need.  He finishes off with the idea of culture, and how behavior, values, and atmosphere are the drivers, and how they all work together to build this thing we call “culture”.

I have been on Charlie for as long as we have been running this event to be part of it and this presentation is exactly why. This phenomenal presentation that gives us a great overview of the system that has put Canada basketball on the map can be downloaded at the store tab under instant downloads, or can be found at https://strengthcoachnetwork.com/cvasps/

Flashback Friday, The 2019 Seminar: Jim Radcliffe- Physical Movement Development, concepts of rehearsal and rhythm

“If your why is to be the best opera singer in the world it’s ok to do rap songs in the shower, but when you go on stage and you get ready to go on stage, and you practice every day to be on stage, then you better rehearse hitting all those notes in the operetta.”

“It’s become more important to have expertise then a big tool box of exercises.”

“Hard work doesn’t mean quality development.”

“Sometimes we get so much into the part that we never get to the whole when we should have started with the whole.”

“Yeah, one size doesn’t fit all, but a systematic approach helps all.”

Jim Radcliffe joined us for The 2019 Seminar to discuss with us concepts of development of movements with our athletes. This presentation starts with Coach Rad sharing with us his “why”, which is the ability to “burst, accelerate, surge.”

Jim then starts to break into different aspects and their importance to, not just training, but developing movement. This list includes:

  • Hip Hinge
  • Hip Projection
  • Hip Whip

Coach Rad then discusses the role of rhythm and its role, not just in movement development, but in sport in general. This leads him down the direction of free play, how using that to develop movement implicitly is so important, and the sociological impact it has on athletes.

Jim also shares with us a case study where they looked at using different weight lifting exercises for potentiation to speed outputs for their athletes. He breaks down exactly what they did, how they did it, what they were looking at, what the results were, and where he thinks the results came from. This case study was redone two more times with some minor alterations, but showed similar results.

Coach Rad finishes off by sharing with us how he sets up his training weeks, what he’s hoping to accomplish with each day, why those days are selected, and how they would make alterations if necessary. This sensational presentation a can be downloaded at the store tab under instant downloads, or can be found at https://strengthcoachnetwork.com/cvasps/
