Coaches Corner #6 – Chris Chase Memphis Grizzles, Hip Hinge Part 1

In Part 1 of his 2-part Coaches Corner, Memphis Grizzlies Chris Chase overviews the basics of the hip hinge. Step one in this is defining what a hip hinge is and what separates this specific movement pattern. Step two is to look at specific requirements of the exercises so that you, as a coach, can select the best mode of hinging for your athletes. This includes some typical issues Coach Chase sees with his athletes and troubleshooting for these “issues” including the cues he has had the most success with.  These three upper body cues that Chris provides us are sure to put your athletes in the best position possible to safely perform these exercises. The last part of this fantastic breakdown, Chris gives us a great way to determine range of motion with the deadlift and variants to, once again, provide your athlete’s the best way to perform the exercises safely looking at your hips, knees, and feet. This unique viewpoint of how he teaches this is fantastic and sure to help improve your athletes’ ability to perform these exercises.

If you’re going to utilize “deadlift” type movements with your athletes, in my opinion this series is a MUST. Next month Chris will breakdown each variant and the reasons for selecting them
