This week I have the absolute pleasure to sit down and discuss speed development with Dr. Ken Clark. After a quick rundown of how he got up to West Chester we get right into discussing speed. We discuss how it’s become more “en vogue” of late, and bridge being connected between research and training. Dr. Clark then shares with us how they bring the research to the track and how the answer to how to connect the practical with the research tends to be, keep it simple. This leads us right into the horizontal vs vertical forces when it comes to speed, and how at the end of the day the answer is some place in the middle. He then discusses top end speed, its role in training, and where it can be utilized in sports that don’t sprint or have time to hit Max V can still benefit from hitting high speeds in training. We finish off discussing the future of research, and how the next step is involving teams and higher-level athletes.
