“When we test our athletes for fitness we should pick things that are important to our sport.”
This month’s exclusive lecture in The Strength Coach Network brings us Jake Jensen breaking down the why’s what’s and how’s of evaluating your athletes, how to best communicate that information to your sport coaches.
After a brief background of where Jake has derived his training philosophy and how he evaluates his athletes Jake dives right into the 5 “why’s” of testing, and more importantly the three why’s of NOT to test your athletes.
Next, Jake touches upon what tests he uses, and what drives the reasoning behind these evaluations. Jake’s primary things he looks at with his players are how they skate and their technical tactical abilities. He shares with us what these specific tests and the metrics he looks at, where they are already seeing a need for altering these evaluations, and how they are driving the training and development of their athletes. Jake even go so far as to break down the fitness testing they utilize with their guys, the pros and cons of this test, how they share that information and display it to their coaches, and how it directs their training with their players.
Jake finishes off discussing with how they test their athletes. He discusses how they set their protocols for their testing and the importance of keeping those consistent, and how issues like “noise” need to be taken into account and, at best, eliminated from your evaluations.
This 40-minute overview of how Jake came to the evaluations he uses, the whys what’s and how’s to it, and the pros and cons of each test including where the limitations of each are, will help you, as a coach, make better decisions as to each aspect of how you evaluate your athletes better. Taking a big step back and evaluating how you evaluate your athletes is the first step to better decision making for your athletes preparation to lead them to better performance
