Chris McCormick-Reflections and Resources as a Coach-The Strength Coach Network

“Where do you want to go in this profession and what’s going to help you last longer so we don’t have these issues of burnout.”

This month’s lecture brings us a thought-provoking discussion involving the connecting of our professional and personal lives from Florida Atlantic University’s Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports, Chris McCormick. After a run-down of how he got down to Boca Raton, FL he shares with us where he sees “things” going professionally with the FAU mission statement, and how that impacts his personal life as well. This leads Coach McCormick to a discussion of the what’s, how’s, and why’s of what they do at FAU with their student athletes. He elaborates greatly on each “tier” of this pyramid including what characteristics are included at each level, how they’re working on these characteristics, and why he finds each important in the betterment the athletes he oversees.

Next, he touches upon who they are at FAU, and this includes how they evaluate the athletes and staff at FAU, leading right into how these all lead into how he looks at strengths and limits in three buckets. These buckets are personal, professional, and technical. There is a limited amount of resources that we can pour into these buckets, and Chris shares with us some examples of how coaches spend so much time in the professional and technical, but tend to leave the personal one empty. Chris then shares with us questions he asks himself in relation to each bucket. to make sure that he’s not leaving one of them empty, and how he has seen these “questions” impact him and his family.

This 45-minute lecture provoked some unique thoughts with me. I really haven’t taken a step back and looked at how I am organizing myself as a coach and as a person outside of the weight room. This has become more of a sexy topic recently, but Chris does a really great job sharing with us some things that we can all look at to improve, and even criticizes himself and how he has developed as a coach.
