Flashback Friday: Val Nasedkin, 2012, Creation of Short and Long-Term Training Goals Based on Biological Markers

“That’s what the goal of any good coach is. How do I optimize the fluctuations of readiness so my athlete can display their skill frequently without a drop performance? At the end, that’s what the game is about.”

Omegawave’s Val Nasedkin’s first presentation at The Seminar in 2012 is one on my list of must watches from The Seminar. This talk reinvented how I personally handle, not only my athletes training, but also how we evaluate them by defining preparedness vs. readiness and their interaction with each other.

To start out this fantastic talk, Val breaks down why we need to look at things differently due to injury rates and participation rates vs medals. This leads directly into him defining the components of performance: preparedness and readiness.  Val breaks down each of these by defining what they are, the components of each, and how these curves interact.

Val’s break down of how he evaluates readiness by looking at different systems in the human body. These 8 systems all adapt at different rates, but each has a “statistical optimal level”. This leads Val to discussing similarities that all high-level athletes who have had longevity in their career possess. This wasn’t impacted based on sport, or size or morphology of athlete. These six biological parameters are what should drive training of athletes. First step in all programming though is an evaluation and there are two categories of evaluations: biological/physiological information, and sport specific evaluations. This data then, in Val’s opinion, needs to be compared to a model of elite athletes in that sport in order to determine the direction of training. This is done by finding the limiting factors to set up the long-term training goals for your athletes.

The final hour of the presentation, Val breaks down how he sets up his training based on long term goals, short term goals, and assessment’s.  First, he breaks down how his training week is based on these evaluations. This includes his use of stimulatory and developmental days, which are designed around the hormonal adaptations of the athlete. The next part of the training week that he breaks down is sessions to improve oxidative qualities of the athlete, along with fiber type training. Many of these methods are derived from the teachings of Dr. Viktor Seluyanov (presenter at The 2014 Seminar). This leads to him discussing the different types of training effects, and why we need to evaluate the athlete each day because of the different training effects on each of the biological parameters of the athlete. This leads him into a brief overview as to why Omegawave looks at specific factors and how it impacts training.
