My Thoughts Monday #41-Sean Fantuzzi, University of North Dakota- The Importance of Training Partners

“The general benefits of having a training partner are they keep you accountable, they make you push harder, they make you go harder, they challenge you to do more than you signed up for and that’s a good thing.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday we are joined by North Dakota’s Sean Fantuzzi discussing the importance of training partners. Sean shares with us a stories of how it has helped his athlete’s find ways to teach each other how “things go” with the older athlete’s partnering with the new ones, helping to develop leadership qualities, and how his training partner has impacted his own training and professional development.

My Thoughts Monday #40-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Monitor to Help Training First, Readiness

“You would think that when the kids are constantly seeing performance improvements that they’re just going to go along with the program, but that’s not necessarily the case all the time.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I follow up on Episode 38 discussing how we looked at readiness with our student athletes in the past that had some great success without stepping outside of the physical preparation of our athletes and getting in the way of the sport coaches work at practice, and what I did wrong that lead to me having to make alterations to how we look at readiness and trainability with our athletes.

My Thoughts Monday #39-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Monitor to Help Training First

“What I did wrong was how I communicated that, and it was basically taken as we can never do X and Y, so yeah, that was a screw up, and I did that wrong, and it was part of the downfall for it. I think that if we would have kept it to the monitoring heart rate for caloric expenditure to make sure that these guys didn’t wither away in season I think we’d still be doing it, and it’s something that we would have been able to expand upon in a greater positive sense and allow it to continue to move forward, but because I stepped out of my lane and messed it up. I screwed the pooch and ruined it.”

My Thoughts Monday #38-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Let’s Not Make Our Pyramids Trapezoids

“What we don’t know is if building a bigger base is if building a bigger base is actually going to allow the pyramid to be higher, or if all we’re doing is building a bigger base and making it go from a triangle or a pyramid, to a trapezoid.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share a conversation we recently had with our interns about planning and building form the general to the specific. For as long as I’ve been coaching we have looked at it as a triangle or pyramid where we talk about building the base to be able to have a taller peak where the specific occurs. We also, as a profession, discuss how we typically don’t touch the specific because that’s the game. So with that in mind I share an idea we have about how we can look at “specific” slightly differently, and hopefully drive our training a bit better and smoother.

My Thoughts Monday #37-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Readiness, or Trainability? What’s Our Role?

“If we were looking at their ability to be trained, their trainability, their actual ability to be able to handle and adapt to stress at that present moment. Then is there the possibility that MAYBE their readiness would be at a better state when you need it to be?”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I follow up on an awesome thread that was on readiness and readiness devices and how important it is. I discuss why I feel like readiness may not be our role, but rather looking at preparedness and trainability

My Thoughts Monday #36-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-An Example of Podcasts Helping Me With My Athletes

“I think that having that chip on your shoulder, especially at our level, when you’re not getting McDonalds All-Americans, when you’re not getting the 4 star, 5 star guys that are automatically going to have some sort of pro career that need to work that need to develop that need to have some sort of kick in the butt at times to to get to where they need to go.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share how a specific podcast, and two specific shows on the MFCEO Project have helped me put together a plan on how to help my guys learn to make better decisions and assist with holding themselves accountable to themselves.

My Thoughts Monday #35-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-Stay Off Other People’s Lawns

“We gotta remember is there’s a chance, that that person who’s owning or running or working at that business, that gym or whatever they train people out of, they have to sell that to that kid. So, we need to understand that we need to be more open to talk to those people so we know the language they were speaking with those kids before they came to us.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss a situation that we recently had a run in with. When we are looking at the differences between the private sector (business people) and the public sector (colleges-pros-high schools) there is a a bit of tension because some people over step their bounds when making statements about what someone in the other part of the field does, and once you start to come off as threatening people grow animosity towards that part of the profession. The moral of this story is, stay off each others lawn and play nice.

My Thoughts Monday #34-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Staying In Our Professional Lane

“You do need to stay in your lane because traffic always flows better when people aren’t going in and out of lanes, BUT you have to know what’s going on in those other lanes because if they need help in one of those lanes from you, you need to be able to change lanes and move over there to help them.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share how my thoughts on PT and rehab have changed a bit based on what I’ve been physically going through, and how understanding what your role is in any process is so important to having smoother transitions in all aspects of sport performance.
