“If we’re going to say, and we’re going to mean, that we are trying to provide the minimal effective dose, and we are trying to pick the low hanging fruit off the tree first then what we can’t do is take the simplest, easiest, least stressful forms of activity and say ‘we will never do that’.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I chime in on a recent discussion I saw on strength coach Twitter, the utilization of aerobic exercise in physical preparation programs. Aerobic work, practically long duration aerobic work, has been looked down upon as a means to improve sport performance, and I feel this is a mistake. There are many situations where low end “cardio” is actually the best choice for an athlete. This really exposes the underlying problem, that we try to make too many blanket statements about training, a subject that we also say shouldn’t have a cookie cutter approach and that we need to go after the “low hanging fruit”. Instead we throw out one of the least stressful means and method we could utilize that can provide the greatest overall impact in their ability to perform at practice and in competition. I think that’s a mistake.
