Podcast 248- An Instagram Live Q and A with Yoeri Pegel

“I don’t care how important we think we are as strength and conditioning coaches, we are secondary, technical/tactical will always be leading.”

I had a great time talking with Instagram Live with Yoeri Pegel to talk all things training. Yoeri gets to work with AFC Ajax’s developmental squad along with a couple other side ventures in training in basketball and fighting. We start out talking about training basketball, how he got into basketball and what are the driving factors to his training philosophy with developing basketball players. We then discuss his transition to soccer, talking about the difference in the athletes, and what things did and didn’t work in basketball vs pro soccer. We then discuss the role of physical preparation in the development of an athlete and where it may need to take a back seat at times, and strategies he had success with getting the pro soccer players to get into the weight room.

At the conclusion of week 2 of our return to sport from this pandemic break came to a conclusion I took some time to reflect. One thing that I kept coming back to were the driving factors behind some decisions we made to make some changes to the plan so that we can keep progressing, and how there was an accidental check point for us to see where we are and how we are progressing. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss where the check point showed up, what we saw, how it impacted our progressions, and how this is going to change how I look at this progression going forward.

As we continue to progress into this return to sport during COVID-19 I’ve had the luxury of being able to discuss with a lot of practitioners about their plans, policy’s, and procedures in the process.  Many of these coaches has expressed the same concerns, and that is a lack of leadership. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share where I feel we, as performance practitioners, can lead better, and really help drive our departments forward because we are so used to having to evolve and be agile and flexible with what we do.

My Thoughts Monday #146- Be Confident, But Ready To Make Changes

The return to sport programming for athletes has been a huge point of conversation through this whole “break” that we have had. Along with building the plan, handling sport coaches along with it has been at the front of everyones mind. This is why it’s vital for coaches to have confidence in, not just the program, but how they communicate what and why they’re doing what they are doing as well, is vital. We also need to be ready and confident in our plans to take care of the athletes that have set backs. What’s our back up plan? What’s our plan for kids that have set backs? How are we, as a performance staff as a whole, going to handle these issues? In this weeks My Thoughts Monday, I share our plans for that, and why this set up the way we do and what some of our “Plan B” ideas are.

Podcast 245- An Instagram Live Q and A with Chris McCormick

“There are a lot of things that we can change that don’t require money or anything like that, it’s just a willingness to change your ideas to do that.”

“It’s not necessarily the information we have, it’s how we project it to people.”

“Just because it’s the best thing doesn’t mean it’s the right thing.”

Chris McCormick joined us for an instagram live to discuss a vast array of things going on with his athletes. The conversation starts with a bit of a self review of the year, what improvements he has seen, where he feels he can improve, and what he is setting into place to make those improvements happen. Chris then shares with us how how role as a director has changed during this pandemic, and how he has tried to be creative to keep things as close to “normal” as possible. Chris then runs down the rabbit hole of our role, how he is trying to expand his, and how communication, or at times keeping quiet, are driving factors.
