Episode 182- Will Greenberg, Buffalo Bills- Structure Governs Function

“Whatever you find is important, you want to emphasize that so the team can be great at that.”

“In your culture, the way that you structure things, governs how things function and how your culture grows.”

Today I have the pleasure of discussing training with the Buffalo Bills Assistant Strength Coach Will Greenberg. After a quick review of his background Will gets into what he has taken from his three unique mentors and how that has impacted him as a professional, not just in training, but managerially with players as well. This leads us into how each of his stops, and different sports, has impacted his work with The Bills. We then discuss how they handle their players in the off season, including how they “sell” what they do and what “standards” they have when they return. We finish off discussing the idea of how structure governs function, both with the athlete in their performance, and the team as a whole with their culture.

There are many topics that keep showing up on the internet from Strength Coaches that are “push button” topics that get a great positive response from our profession. One at the top of that list is the idea of early specialization is bad for athletes. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss my thoughts on the topic and why I feel like we need to slow down with making this idea the villain.

This includes his use of force plates, what they are looking at numbers wise, and how it impacts the training for the athletes. We then discuss his role with swimming, and the KPI’s that they have for these athletes. This includes how they are looking at specifics in the water.

“We can talk about “this can make you faster,” but did it?”

“If you’re not giving me hard data, and numbers, to show me that you’re getting better at what you’re training for, then bro who cares man? WHO CARES?”

In this field we love to look at what other people do and evaluate their work, but many times we don’t have an actual reference point to look at. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share my thoughts on this, and the importance of sharing outcomes of our programs to better help coaches make decisions on how they train their athletes in the future.

Episode 180- Dr. Sean Maloney, Chris Bishop, and Dr. Anthony Turner- Asymmetries, Good Bad or Indifferent?

“The best way to think about an asymmetry is your weaker limb has a bigger window of opportunity for you to develop and get stronger.”

“Dominance is task specific”

“When you do things out of the ordinary that’s when these imbalances can come out and grab you.”

“Good quality training will naturally reduce asymmetries.”

Today we have an awesome round table with Dr. Sean Maloney, Chris Bishop, and Dr. Anthony Turner to discuss asymmetries and the role of research in where they fit in sport training. After a brief introduction we start out with Chris’s research (he’s getting his PhD now) including the what’s, why’s, and how’s he’s looking at with asymmetries in athletes. This runs us right into what Dr. Maloney has seen with his research and what he’s seeing in the gym along side it with training the athletes he gets to work with. Dr. Turner then discusses with us the statistical anomalies that occur with these asymmetries and how strength capacity is so important in looking at the difference in the limbs. We also discuss the role of functional adaptations when it comes to asymmetries in athletes, the role of the task in identifying asymmetries, the effects of competition on them, and the role in bilateral and unilateral training.

My Thoughts Monday #79- Jay DeMayo- What Is Necessary For Your Athlete’s Depends On YOU

“We need to take a step back and understand that giving them what they need, not what they can handle is completely dependent upon what you’ve prescribed and how you have developed them as an athlete.”

A week ago I was up at SSI for an awesome education event. During the event was a great round table Q and A, and one question really stuck with me. As coaches, we really like our if P then Q situations and having all our progressions and regressions set. Understanding the idea of minimal effective dose and giving the athlete what they need, not what they can handle, is determined by how prepared the athlete is, how ready the athlete is, and how well you have prepared the athlete. I give my take on this, where I see this confusion coming from and how we can do better with understanding where these “alterations” can come from.

Last week there was a pretty significant backlash to Michigan State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Izzo’s response to an athlete making a mistake. I feel this is something that we, as strength coaches, need to take a look at as we try to progress the profession forward. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss where I see as something that we need to take note of, why it could have a huge impact on our progress as a profession, and what we need to consider in these heated situations.

Episode 178- Dr. Nicole Surdyka- The Return To Play Continuum

“Return to sport should not be seen as this one day, it’s more of a continuum, a sliding scale.”

“If we get them back to where they were preinjury, we are just putting them back into a state in which they were able to get injured”

“There’s always a way to get them in the weight room earlier.”

Today we are joined by Dr. Nicole Surdyka to discus ACL injuries. After a brief introduction, Dr. Surdyka get’s right into decisions and questions related to knee surgery. This leads right down the rabbit hole of deconditioning, and how evaluations in return to play can be “off” because of this. She then touches upon the importance of confidence and psychology is in the rehab process. We finish off with a discussion on reintroducing the athlete to training and how we can move forward by moving backwards sometimes.

As we enter this transition period of the year, being where many basketball teams are somewhere between the post season and off season, we need to make sure that we look at how we are handling the athletes we get to work with. The “Grind” as so many like to call it can be a good thing, the idea of wanting to work more and put in the effort can be a good thing, BUT if we just blindly work, and keep going and going and “GRINDING” are we actually pushing people in a proper direction and moving them forward, or are we just “GRINDING” their knees. Today I share my thoughts on this and where I feel like we can help them “GRIND” smarter, while still doing the work they want to.
