Podcast 243- A Reality Check with Don Day

“Some people don’t know how to have the conversations because they can’t fathom what we go through.”

“It starts with conversation. You can’t have common ground if you don’t have conversations.”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. This weeks episode of The Podcast is a conversation I got to have with Don Day recently on the present social and political situations. This conversation was very eye opening for me to hear what is still going on throughout the country, and college athletics is not immure to it. We discuss Black Lives Matter, and Don sheds some light onto some of the misconceptions. We discuss college athletics and where there are still issues that are race related, and some specific issues within the system that limit the advancement of African Americans. Don gets into so very personal stories, real life situations, where he has experienced racism. This whole conversation, in my opinion, is one that coaches need to be having with their athletes, and colleagues to find out how we can all be better, together.

My Thoughts Monday #143- Have a Plan, That Fits Your Principles, Driven With Data

“If we have to make alterations to the plan, if we don’t have a plan, there is nothing to make alterations too.”

“Weather your principles are X, Y, or Z itchy need to be able lead directly into the plan that you have, and if your principles lead into the plan, then how you are monitoring, or how you are evaluating, or what you are monitoring, should fall right into place.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. With all their products providing evidence-based solutions to performance professionals so they can get the right information, for the right decision, at the right time. Dr. Josh Nelson joined us for FREE-VASPS to share with us how they are going to evaluate their student athletes, and what are the driving factors behind these metrics. In today’s My Thoughts Monday I share what I took away from this talk, being how important it is to have a plan that fits your principles, how those should drive you to what data you’re going to utilize to make sure you’re moving in the right direction, and how we need to be better with simply clearly communicating what is important.

My Thoughts Monday #142- Monitoring Is More Then Just Taking Away

“Our job is to increase performance, and one of the things we have to do to increase performance is increase the athletes resilience to stress. You can not increase the athlete’s resilience to stress if you don’t stress the athlete.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. Today’s My Thoughts Monday is a review of Emma Beanland’s presentation at FREE-VASPS. Emma is one of the most well versed people in athlete tracking in the world, and has taught many coaches the ins and outs of it, so with that in mind we could talk for a long time about the simplicity and complexity of how she deciphers the data, and the roles of floor and ceiling values, but today I discuss one thing she said. That is the thought that coaches still look at all of these monitoring devices as a means to make athletes do less work, when in reality, I feel the goal is the exact opposite.

Podcast 241- An Instagram Live Q and A with Aaron DuVall

“We don’t want to have this abstract mosaic of what the athlete looks like, we want to paint the clearest picture of them as possible.”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. This weeks episode of The Podcast is a discussion I got to have with Aaron DuVall on how they have built their monitoring program. Aaron shares with us the work they are doing with their engineering department, and how that is impacting the work they are doing with their student athletes. This is an exceptionally unique situation and one that many of us in this field need to take better advantage of, not just because they can provide a service, but they can also provide a different view point of what we are looking at. He also breaks down how they collect and utilize subjective information from their athletes, and how that has been very beneficial to them in the ability to program better for their athletes.

My Thoughts Monday #140- Self Auditing Your KPI’s To Improve Your Programming

“We need to be able to have measurements that are going to indicate that we are improving the athlete in some way that will impact their performance.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. This weeks My Thoughts Monday is a review of a huge take-a-way from Stephanie Mock’s awesome presentation from FREE-VASPS. Stephanie shared with us their entire return to sport progression, including how they’re going to train there athletes when they return, but the primary take away for me was her evaluations and how she discussed our role in developing objective KPI’s. The idea of KPI’s and tracking has been a bit of a hot button of late, and are things that we all should have been implementing for some time now. In this My Thoughts Monday, I share how this layoff period has been super helping in allowing us to have a great opportunity to look at what we are evaluating, address deeper how it will impact programming, how we can better share information, and so on.
