After a quick run down of how Andrew got up to Amherst, he dives right into what where the driving factors behind the training he set up for the softball team at UMASS. This includes teaching the athletes what “full effort” is, and how they plan out their training weeks. He then shares with us what improvements he saw by cutting the volume of the work and what the athlete’s subjective response was it. Next, he shares with us what he’s taken away from this experiment with cutting volume, and how he sees it impacting his programming in the future. We finish off discussing how this model will alter his in season training, how he has shifted his “focus” with the team, and what he thought he did really well and what he would improve upon.

My Thoughts Monday #129- Chris Hays- You are EXACTLY Where YOU Need To Be

“If we all were to start at our dream job, our maximum potential to fulfill that job, those roles and responsibilities, wouldn’t be as as high as it could. If we didn’t work our way up the ladder, and go through the trials and tribulations of a lower level position, being able to work through those mistakes and those failures, and those lessons. Where at those bigger levels, power 5. etc., certain mistakes aren’t as forgivable.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. With all their products providing evidence-based solutions to performance professionals so they can get the right information, for the right decision, at the right time. Chris Hays rejoins us for this weeks My Thoughts Monday to discuss the idea of identifying the situation you’re in, and what is keeping you from moving “up” to where you feel you “should” be. He shares with us how his experience and the mistakes he’s been able to make while at his current position has allowed him to grow exponentially.

My Thoughts Monday #128- The Value of Valuing Each Other

“You gotta be willing to value their opinion, you’ve gotta be willing to value what they tell you matters and what doesn’t because when you value them and everyone values each other then a lot of really good things happen and it makes things really roll easy.”

“That’s the most overlooked thing in all of sports. Find you a crew that really wants to work for each other, and really likes each other, and really loves each other, and is willing to do whatever it takes even if that means stepping aside and doing less, or not arguing with someone over something because it’s really not what is most important at the present moment.”

This week I share my final reflection for this season, and that is the importance of finding value with each person in the group. We are really lucky to have a group that truly likes to be around each other, and work with each other. There have been a few things that if the group I am lucky to be part of didn’t get along so well we wouldn’t have been doing, including many of these “routines” that we have developed. It has also has required me to shift my view of how some situations are handled, and made me take a step back and look at things differently has made the entire situation better for, not just me, but everyone else involved.

We are joined by Trinity College’s Bill DeLongis to discuss team building strategies. After a brief run down of how he got up to Trinity Bill dives right into the driving factor behind some of these strategies. This leads us right into how he selects athletes to be in “leadership” roles and how different methods have helped him get athletes to get outside their comfort zone and improve these characteristics. He shares with us quite a few different examples of ‘workouts’ that they use and what the goal is of each. Bill then discusses how he periodizes his workouts around them, and where there are times he may back down because of them, and even why he may not back down at all. We then discuss some of the pros and con’s of the Division III rules, and how that impacts all the work he’s doing with his student athletes. We finish off discussing how he feels coaches can implement more of these types of methods, and expand our role in developing leadership. Make sure to give him a follow on IG @billdelongis for great examples of this.

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday we take a quick pause on our reflections of the season and talk about how some coaches are handling the “down time” and trying to find better ways to learn and communicate with each other so that we can be better for the athletes when they come back. With this though, we are going to ask a big favor. Record it. Do it live on social media. Share it with everyone and get others involved. We are going to try to set up a live talk with a staff or coach daily for the next couple weeks as well. If there’s anyone you want to hear from or if you want to be involved let us know!
